Places to visit

My own list of places I want to check.  Info taken from blogs read so far:

Places to visit

Vesuvius - Virginia:
Gertie's Country Store
563 Tye River Turnpike Vesuvius, VA 24483 (540) 377-9313
“lovely ladies at Gertie’s Store – a must if you’re doing the TransAm.”

http://www.gonnaridemybike.com/2011/05/day-11-the-tough-just-got-going/

“the Farmers Table in the town of Honaker, in case you’re passing through.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marion - Kentucky:
last stop in Kentucky.
“Marion seems to be the most friendly town around.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Berea – Kentucky:
“Berea - This place is cool, a cross between Hebden Bridge and Chorlton, a bit smarter, and without the homoshexules - there is still a lot of God here. I've actually eaten real food - cookies that have recently come out of an oven and not a packet and ice cream that was home made. I've been trying to find some fruit and veg to eat but didn't see anywhere whilst I was cycling round so asked at the tourist office. Literally, the only place that sells fruit in the whole town.  Berea is the craft and folk capital of Kentucky and is in the top 25 small art towns in the US (can you tell I'm using the computer in the tourist office?). I'm staying at the Morning Glory B+B (!!!) (well, I had to look) which is so-named after the Morning Glory flowering plant (Bindweed in the UK I think). It's cool - the people who run it are weavers so there is all handmade stuff all over, and as I type they are making stuff on the looms in the shop downstairs.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elizabethtown – Illinois:
E'Town River Restaurant
(618) 287-2333  100 Front St, Elizabethtown, IL 62931

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elizabethtown – Illinois:
 E'Town River Restaurant
(618) 287-2333  100 Front St, Elizabethtown, IL 62931
“After a few nights of free/cheap eating, we felt able to splash out a bit so headed to the E-Town restaurant which floats on the Ohio river and serves up All-you-can-eat cat fish”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marshfield - Missouri:
Jays Nest
104 SOUTH CRITTENDEN, Marshfield, MO 65706 ·
“He recommended Jays Nest, a hotdog place in Marshfield, serving amazing hotdogs with a variety a heart attack inducing toppings.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marshfield - Missouri:
Jays Nest
104 SOUTH CRITTENDEN, Marshfield, MO 65706 ·
“We stopped for lunch in Marshfield at a new ‘speciality hot dogs’ diner called Jays Nest that has just been open 6 weeks. Thanks to Dustin for the tip on his blog! I had the ’Jack Russel’ – definitely the best hot dog I’ve ever had.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fair Grove – Missouri:
Odd Fellows
(417) 759-1702  82 S Main St, Fair Grove, MO 65648
“We got to Fair Grove and set up tents off the main road in the city park. We wandered up the hill for dinner and found a restaurant called Odd Fellows, where they were serving great, healthy food and not a deep fat fryer in sight. Not only was the food delicious but the restaurant looked great too,”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden City, Missouri:
Cooky’s Cafe
517 Main St  Golden City, MO 64748
“Golden City for lunch. We were told that Cooky’s Cafe serves some of the best pie you can get and it lived up to the billing for our visit. I recommend the strawberry pie highly.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden City, Missouri:
Cooky’s Cafe
517 Main St  Golden City, MO 64748
“Lunch brings me to the town of Golden City, one of the last in Missouri, and to a restaurant called Cooky's.
Cooky's is famous on the TransAm for their pie. And really, how can I go wrong with a place called Cooky's?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden City, Missouri:
Cooky’s Cafe
517 Main St  Golden City, MO 64748
“Lunch was a very welcome break at Golden City, at Cooky’s Cafe - famous amongst TransAm’ers for their home-cooked pies. I could honestly eat a slice of their pie every day for the rest of my life!”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Centerville - Missouri:
Diner 21
2277 Highway 21
, Centerville, Missouri  63633
“Luncheon was served by the ladies of Diner 21 in Centerville (population 171). First course was a rather splendid ‘Big 21 beef burger served with potato chips. Dessert was a sumptuous hot-fudge ice-cream sundae.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

eureka - Missouri:
“Parry and John & Bill had told us about the pool in Eureka and to ask for Becky when we got there. Turns out Becky, a mother of five and the swimming pool manager, regularly hosts cyclists at her home. We spent a lazy afternoon by the pool, watching kids nearly kill themselves as they leaped off the diving board in all sorts of contorted ways. Rest assured Tom Daily – your title is safe for the time being! Matt made the mistake of taking his t-shirt off for about 30 seconds and is now sporting some nice red shoulders.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto - Kansas:
Lizard Lips Grill & Deli
(620) 637-2384  153 Highway 54, Toronto, KS 66777
“If you're traveling on the TransAm, be sure to stop at the Lizard Lips grill and deli, located at the intersection of Hwy 54 and 105 on the top left corner of map #97. They have a sense of humor about themselves there (follow the yellow brick road to the bathrooms?!!) and be sure to sign the cyclists log before you go. You won't find much in Toronto by way of services anyway.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hutchinson – Kansas:
Cosmosphere Space Museum
1100 N Plum St  Hutchinson, KS 67501, United States (620) 662-2305
“The day before was Hutchinson  and the Cosmosphere Space Museum .
“Today we had a 58 mile stretch with no services (and 48 miles of that was in on the same dead-straight road). Many folk have struggled with this section, running low/out of water and getting dehydrated etc. But not us!”
““After checking into the Zion Lutheran church cycle hostel in town, we headed like excited little kids to the Cosmosphere Space Museum.” SR-71”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sheridan Lake to Ordway - Colorado:
??
“Instead we found Smooches bar in Sugar City, CO”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guffey – Colorado:
“Guffey is also famous for their 4th of July chicken launch. Seriously, they put live chickens into these little cannons or mailboxes, and use a toilet plunger to push the chicken out with air pressure. The person whose chicken flies the furthest wins. This place turns into festival central for the 4th, and sadly, we are merely days too early to take part in the celebration.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boulder – Colorado:
“It's a hot Sunday In Boulder Colorado. What a cool town. Laid back, civilised, good food, things going on. The things a lot of the other towns so far haven't had”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

florence – Colorado:
727 E Main St Florence, CO 81226 (719) 784-1391 (Compadres Mexican Cuisine)
http://enormousbikeride.blogspot.com/2009/08/yes-it-is-rockies.html
“Florence. It had a main street with actual shops in it, not closed ones made to look occupied. And people. I decided to eat and went to a Mexican place, Con-Los I think. It was fab.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeffrey City - Wyoming:
the-Split-Rock-Bar-and-Cafe
2297 Hwy 789, Jeffrey City, WY 82310
the-Split-Rock-Bar-and-Cafe
“Our home away from home for the day Vikki, the new management, is VERY kind to cyclist; apparently there was some trouble with the old owner who disliked us two wheeled road hippies”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeffrey City - Wyoming:
the-Split-Rock-Bar-and-Cafe
2297 Hwy 789, Jeffrey City, WY 82310
“The bar has come under new management this year, and is now very, very cyclist friendly. Jeffrey City used to be known as the most unfriendly city to cyclists on the TransAm because the motel (when it was open) would overcharge cyclists and the bar owner used to charge cyclists just to use the restroom.
So if you're ever coming through Jeffrey City, be sure to stop at the Split Rock Bar for a spell. Their food is awesome, and the owner and her daughter that run the place are extremely friendly and have plenty of good history and stories to tell.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeffrey City - Wyoming:
the-Split-Rock-Bar-and-Cafe
2297 Hwy 789, Jeffrey City, WY 82310
“Our destination was Jeffrey City, once a town of 5000 people with a huge Uranium mine. Then the mine shut and nearly everyone left. Today it’s pretty much a ghost town with about 50 people and 5 billion mosquitoes living there. But I’d heard good things about it from other cyclists so we were intrigued to see what it was like. We weren’t disappointed. The Split Rock bar/cafe is under new management and they like cyclists! Wahey”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ennis - Wyoming:
Ennis looks nice
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ennis - Wyoming:
“Ennis but it looked quite a cool little town with lots of oldy worldy shops”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jackson – Wyoming:
http://www.gonnaridemybike.com/2011/06/day-51-shhh-dont-tell-anyone-but/

“At about 55 miles we turned off the TransAm *gasp* and headed south *double gasp* towards Jackson which we’d heard was a cool place to spend a day (or a month if you could afford it).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jackson – Wyoming:
“The 20 miles this morning from Jackson to Jenny Lake was easily the most beautiful part of the whole trip so far. We rode along a nice smooth, winding cycle path through meadows full of wild flowers along the foot of the Tetons. Jackson Lake gave a near mirror image of the Tetons and everything looked perfect.” --- that lovely picture of the mountains reflecting in the lake
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jackson – Wyoming:
Merry Piglets Mexican restaurant

160 N Cache Dr  Jackson, WY 83001, United States (307) 733-2966
Jackson is not a cyclist-friendly town - We ate out at Merry Piglets Mexican restaurant, on recommendation. The 25 minute wait to be seated was worth it – I just love Mexican food!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lander – Wyoming:
Gannett Peak Sports
351 Main St Unit B Lander, WY 82520
“At the bike shop the owner, Brian, and his tech, Ed, are more than friendly and capable of taking care of Big E. They are accustomed to seeing TransAm-ers come through their shop with various 'I need it done today' types of bike problems, and are nothing but friendly! If you're doing the TransAm, Gannett Peak Sports in Lander is a great place to get work done. These guys speak the touring language and can cater to our needs well.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rawlins – Wyoming:
“We stopped for lunch in Rawlins, (the best rhubarb strawberry pie, with vanilla ice cream...no small portions in this area for sure)” and made our way on to Lamont for the night
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rawlins – Wyoming:
Anong's Thai Cuisine,
Rawlins 210 5th St, Rawlins, WY 82301
“The fact that there was a well-known Thai lunch buffet in town (Anungs) had absolutely nothing to do with it… but I can definitely echo the recommendations of others – their food was a very welcome break from the burgers we normally live off.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dubois – Wyoming:
“The scenery was fantastic as I slowly climbed up the Wind River valley. Picture postcard log cabins with horses in lush green paddocks were flanked on one side by the rushing river and the other by towering rock formations which reminded me more of Arizona.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saratoga – Wyoming:
“Saratoga, where they have hot springs. I thought I could relax in those for a while after nearly 70 miles of biking. Ha. I nearly burned my feet testing the water out. They weren't joking when they called it hot springs”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Missoula, Montana:
Taco del Sol
422 N Higgins Ave Missoula, MT 59802
“I head for a burrito at Taco del Sol. It's amazingly tasty, one of the best burritos I've ever had. Go there if you're ever in Missoula!”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montana:
“Glacier National Park on Saturday that might happen. It's supposed to be some of the best scenery in the US,”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arlee - North Montana:
“By the time we’d finished it was almost lunch-time – but instead we drove out of town to a little place called Arlee where every July 4th there is a big gathering of Native Americans (a pow-wow) as well as a rodeo.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

white bird – Idaho:
White Bird's battlefield is one of the only places where Indians defeated the U.S. Army
The town of White Bird is tiny, the Chief White Bird Motel the dumpiest yet. The only other motel is Hoots, before you get into town
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oregon:
Moe's Bike Shop
1397 Sherman Ave  North Bend, OR 97459, United States (541) 756-7536
